Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers apply their expertise to the design, development, and manufacture of everything from rocket propulsion systems to automobiles; computers and aircraft engines to appliances. Mechanical engineers use mathematics, computers, and sophisticated modeling and analysis to solve problems associated with energy usage, propulsion, power generation, sound and vibration, machinery design, and manufacturing. Mechanical engineers use creativity and problem solving skills to develop new and more efficient designs for mechanical inclination and systems. Achievements in mechanical engineering include the development of wind and water turbines, steam engines, and internal combustion engines.
Eligibility For Mechanical Engineering
Education qulification
Must have 10th Std. board exam with at least 50% marks. Various polytechnics offer diploma in various disciplines of engineering. To be eligible for bachelor's degree course i.e. B.E or B.BTech, one must clear the 12th std. board exam with at least 50% marks(60% for IITs) in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. Several states and IITs have an entrance exam for admission into engineering, colleges in other states grant admission based on marks scored in 12th Std. exam, particularly in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Diploma holders can also get direct admission into second year of engineering in the same stream in which they have completed their diploma. For a master's level course, one must complete the bachelor's degree program successfully. Further Studies After graduating students can go in for postgraduate studies ie M.E or M.Tech. Further studies up to Ph.D. level are also an option for anyone interested in Research or Academics. There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's engineering degree through distance education.
Personal Skills
Mechanical engineering technicians need to have excellent mechanical engineering skills, as well as technical drawing and computer skills for designing machines and equipment. It requires IT, design and analytical skills together with an ability to conceptualize structures. They must have numeric skills as math's is an important tool, an wondering and logical mind to make connections between ideas and handle abstract concepts, creative and innovative ideas to find solutions to problems which may need a new perspective, good practical skills to apply math's and science to real problems. Organising ability, practicality, ability to get on well with people of all types, ability to keep equanimity under pressure and flexibly to work in a multi disciplinary area are an asset in the field.
Mechanical Engineers can find employment in both public and private sector industries like Telegraphs, Defense, PWD, and CPWD, aeronautical, agricultural, automobile, chemical, and power plants, as well as the railways, need mechanical engineers to design and maintain their machinery. Mechanical Engineers also mostly required in automobile, chemical, electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining, technical wings of armed forces, space research organisation, etc. Candidates with post graduate degree or an additional management degree could find work in administrative and managerial positions in government departments or public and private sector industries. Those who interested in research activities can work with many public/private sector research organizations. These engineers also can choose teaching in technical institutions as a lucrative profession.
